Family Projects

JOIN OUR COORDINATED OR OTHER DNA PROJECTS:

You can immediately join these test(s) by linking to Family Tree DNA at one of the DNA test sites: LOWE, BAILEY, CLARK, PENCE, STEPHENS, BARR. You may elect to browse the five items below to inform yourself about our coordinated SURNAME Y chromosome NRY DNA testing process and procedure. The LOWE DNA men NRY project is the only project sponsored and coordinated by myself. Reduced prices will be given to all DNA test participants of registered FTDNA Surname Projects. Contact me for further information.

DETAILS OF DNA TESTING OF OUR SURNAME COORDINATED PROJECTS:

(1.) WHO CAN TAKE THIS TEST:

Only male descendants whose great-grandfathers, grand-fathers, and fathers and sons who have the same SURNAME; and, are related directly “by blood” to their known oldest male ancestor. Sons of mothers with the same last SURNAME are not eligible to be tested.

(2.) PRIVACY, SECURITY, TEST RESULT RELEASE:

All test participants will be assigned a test kit project number. All DNA analysis and online reporting will utilize this assigned test kit number and the name of the oldest known SURNAME male ancestor. Participant’s names and DNA test results will not be released and/or published by this test coordinator of our DNA sponsored projects unless written permission to do so is received via email. Also names and email addresses or other information will not be released to others unless the participant himself contacts others. The Family Tree DNA company is also bound by Texas State law not to release your information to anyone!! And we too will honor your privacy.

(3.) DNA TO BE TESTED:

The human has 46 chromosomes. Our project tests only a part of the Y male chromosome at 12 or 25 marker loci sites to match these same markers with men who are potentially SURNAME cousins. This test shows kinship and nothing else. This is not a paternity-type DNA test like the U.S. military now uses with all inductees; nor, does it test all 46 chromosomes to reveal personal and private genetic information that some labs could use for medical or insurance screening. Our project only tests part of the male Y chromosome. The University of Arizona Staff will conduct all DNA analysis and return each set of results to FTDNA in Houston for release to the SURNAME project coordinator and the test participant.

(4.) TYPE OF DNA TEST:

A DNA test participant may elect to take the 12 marker or the 25 NRY marker test. All FTDNA test samples will be kept 20 years in cold storage at the University of Arizona. At any time during this period a test participant can elect to upgrade their 12-marker test to a 25-marker DNA or upgrade to a maternal mtDNA and/or other FTDNA DNA test procedure.

(5.) HOW TO TAKE THIS DNA TEST:

Family Tree DNA Company (FTDNA) in Houston, Texas will mail out a numbered DNA test kit to all male project participants who register for this SURNAME project, The DNA test samples consist of a small plastic swab brush and a vial of preservative liquid. The DNA sample consists of loose epithelial cells inside the cheek area that are brushed off during the one minute sampling process, sealed in the preservative liquid and mailed back to the Family Tree DNA company for testing. This test doesn't entail sampling of blood or other invasive tissue sampling procedures. An addressed return envelope to FTDNA is provided in the original test DNA kit.
